Abstract
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”1 These are perhaps the most famous words Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, a series of words that have come to represent how the concepts of freedom and equality are fundamental to the identity of America. The fight to honor those words, to expand the number of people who have access that freedom, is one of the longest political struggles in the history of the United States.
