Woodcut illustration attributed to José Guadalupe Posada, a Mexican engraver and illustrator best known for his works called Calaveras, which used skeletons as a motif to satirize the life of upper classes during the reign of Porfirio Diaz. For a short while, he worked at Antonio Venegas Arroyo’s studio. Broadside of verse in which Sargent Ignacio Jimenez bids farewell to his family while awaiting execution. The Amistad“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights.”1 These are perhaps the most famous words Thomas Jefferson wrote in the Declaration of Independence, a series of words that have come to represent how the concepts of freedom and equality are fundamental to the identity of America. The fight to honor those words, to expand the number of people who have access that freedom, is one of the longest political struggles in the history of the United States.

Free Tom Mooney! An Exhibition of the Yale Law Library's Tom Mooney Collection.In 1916, a bomb explosion was the pretext that San Francisco authorities needed to prosecute the militant left-wing labor organizer Tom Mooney on trumped-up murder charges. Mooney’s false conviction set off a 22-year campaign for his exoneration. The Yale Law Library, with a collection of over 150 items on the Mooney case, mounted an exhibition marking the centennial of Mooney's arrest.
