dc.description.abstractFifty-eight years separate the 1896 decision in Plessy v. Ferguson from Brown v. Board of Education. Forty-nine years separate the 1954 opinion in Brown I from Grutter v. Bollinger. Brown, it turns out, lies almost exactly between Plessy and Grutter. This is not an accident. It symbolizes an important fact, which is the subject of this essay.
