Abstract
The word "law" resonates richly in the language and mythology of western civilization. H.L.A. Hart began his great work, The Concept of Law, with an inquiry into the persistence of the question "what is law?" in our jurisprudence. He argued that it is strange that such an apparently elementary question has persisted in jurisprudence while no analogous question such as "What is chemistry?" has occupied other areas of human inquiry.
