Abstract
Let me begin with the obvious. What follows is a thoroughly subjective assessment; and it comes from another 1960s Bernard Bailyn student. The perspective I share is part of a particular historiographical generation; and I, myself, am tinged by whiggism—perhaps more than I recognize. Please accept these caveats.
