Abstract
To summarize, the impact of the "new" age of political reform has been wider and deeper than that of the Progressive Era and has led to "defeated expectations and unwanted consequences" that would have astonished even so skeptical an observer as Alex Bickel. It has impacted upon our political parties with a destructiveness that even now is difficult to comprehend.
