Abstract
The necessary conjunction of caution with wisdom has been the very definition ofjudicial conduct in American law. The common law methodology, deferring to precedent and deciding only what is necessary to resolve the specific dispute at hand, exemplifies this conjunction. Constitutional adjudication has traditionally followed this course.
