Abstract
A number of cases were decided by the Supreme Court of the United States in the late thirties and early fourties which involved the First Amendment's guarantee of the free practice of religion. Most of these cases involved members of the sect known as Jehovah's Witnesses. Three such cases upholding legislation requiring licenses for the street distribution of literature were decided by the Court on June 8, 1942. The decision was five to four, the majority consisting of Justices Reed, Roberts, Jackson, Frankfurter and Byrnes.
